Our Model

Overcoming believes that the legacy of white haughtiness and the resulting racial hierarchy constitute a moral and social evil that must be addressed and redressed if we are ever to achieve genuine racial equality and meaningful racial reconciliation. This redress should take place at every social and relational level in which it exists. But even as we advocate for more comprehensive approaches, we believe that personal moral responsibility requires us to take those steps that are within our individual purview. Doing so provides a practical benefit for some who have been disadvantaged, creating a movement in the direction of equality. Furthermore, this individual initiative will provide us with greater moral leverage to advocate for broader measures of redress. Overcoming typically features one program at a time (Scholarships, Assistance to Currently/Formerly Incarcerated Persons, Micro Business Loans, Congressional Internships). All donations to the General Fund are aggregated for that featured project until it is completed. If you have a particular passion for a different program and prefer to direct your giving to a different program, you certainly may do so. Just realize that unless your donation is sufficiently large to fund an entire project, it could be some time before enough funding is received for a grant to be made.

Overcoming promotes racial redress in two ways:

Aggregating Donations

We aggregate the donations of those who feel a responsibility to compensate the historic inequalities caused by racial haughtiness, then we grant those funds to organizations who are doing great work on the ground to empower members of minority communities. How does Overcoming add value to the good that people can do on their own? Whites who feel the burden of redress cannot go around giving money to random representatives of minority communities without straining relationships even further or creating a paternalistic dynamic. Not only that, but many people wouldn't even know where to start.

So we do the groundwork to identify reliable organizations through which to funnel your funding. This provides the donor with a necessary layer of anonymity. Of course, one could give directly to these organization, and the money would still be put to good use without the end recipients having any idea where it came from. But that amounts to almost too much anonymity, because the person who provides redress does want it to be know that they are not merely doling out compassion from the safety of their lofty perch in the racial hierarchy but engaging in an act of penitence and justice. Overcoming requires its collaborating organizations to facilitate the communication of the Overcoming ethos, so that the end recipients of our funding understand the motivations of those we represent.

Not only does Overcoming provide a layer of anonymity while still allowing donors to communicate their passion to bring justice to bear on injustice, the fact that we pool the funds of multiple donors means that we can accomplish more and call more attention to our message. A lone individual trying to engage in redress will likely be seen as a rogue act, whereas a collective can fund an entire project, make more of a splash, and build a foundation for racial healing.

Facilitating Personal Involvement

Overcoming is creating a clearinghouse of opportunities for individuals to give of their time and talents toward the cause of racial redress. While it is possible for whites to share their social advantage while still clinging to their historic position atop the racial hierarchy, it is also possible for whites to share skills and connections and interpersonal time with an humble attitude and a commitment to radical equality. That results in mutually rewarding relationships and an opportunity to turn history on its head, by working on behalf the well-being of others whose well-being has long been denied along the lines of color.

Overcoming merely puts people in touch with these opportunities for personal involvement and does not exercise control over the resulting connections. Nevertheless, we do invite people to participate with a particular mindset, as set forth in White as Sin: A New Paradigm for Racial Healing (CLICK HERE to get a copy). And we are careful to choose organizations that encourage people to serve in ways that promote healthy interracial relationships and to value equality.
